4/30-5/6... A Quiet Weekend Before the Storm

This past weekend (May 2nd and 3rd) was a small one for us. Not surprising, honestly. Finals are creeping up fast, and a lot of our regulars are college students juggling the same end‑of‑semester chaos I am. When everyone’s buried in projects, papers, and caffeine, dance understandably slips a little lower on the priority list. Still, even with a smaller crowd, we made the most of it.
Friday night was actually a bright spot. We taught East Coast Swing for the first time, and people really seemed to enjoy it. The energy was light, playful, and everyone picked it up faster than I expected. It felt good... one of those lessons where the room breathes together and everything clicks.
Saturday… well, Saturday was a different story.
We decided to teach some more advanced Two Step, and in hindsight, it wasn’t the right call. Most people struggled to catch the pattern, and even though they were good sports about it, I could feel the frustration in the room. They told us afterward that they liked seeing “where they could be someday,” which was sweet — but that’s not the point of lessons. Lessons should feel accessible, not discouraging.
I left feeling a little guilty, honestly. But hey... every instructor has those nights, and now we know better for next time.
During the week, I didn’t learn anything new. Between school, work, and prepping for finals, my brain was already at capacity. Instead, I spent time reviewing some easier dances I haven’t touched in a while. Ones I want to bring back for the new summer crowd once everyone’s schedules calm down.
